So, I was sitting in class this week, and we were talking about multiculturalism and stereotyping and how evil that is... as is the norm, everyone was quite worked up... one lady started into a story about how she had a boss a long time ago who was so mean and racist and awful (truly, this man sounded insane.) The part that made me laugh as I drove home was the exchange I heard between the two people sitting behind me.
Student one (whispering): He sounds nuts! Where did she say she worked?
Student two (also whispering): She didn't say, but she said he was from a manufacturing background. That doesn't surprise me at all. You know how manufacturers can be...
These two students had been particularly vociferous when it came to the evils of stereotyping. The problem, is we never put a definition on culture.. does it mean your race, your sexual preference, your economic standing, your clothing style, your location... or your occupation? When you identify with a culture, what does that even mean? Which ones are ok to stereotype and critique... and which ones are above comment?

ReplyDeleteIn response to your last post...I appreciate your perspective. I have grown to hold many of the convictions you mentioned just through growth and experiences, but now that I'm a parent my convictions are even greater!
Thanks for sharing Hannah!
